In 2009, Monika Hinterwaldner had the idea to start a “support group” for professional illustrators after returning to the United States to jump-start her career as a professional illustrator.
“I saw it as a way to make new friends and connect with other illustrators, who tend to and often need to spend long hours alone in their studios to complete their work.”
A fortuitous meeting with Pat Achilles at an event where Pat was promoting her artwork led to the formation of what is now the “Bucks County Illustrators Society.”
Along the way, Glenn Zimmer was recruited at an SCBWI event (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators), and has since become an invaluable asset to the illustrators’ group, providing custom promotional materials and audio/ visual support for our speaker events.
Three years on, we look forward to continuing to promote the art and business of illustration, by offering monthly meetings for our members to provide career support and critique opportunities. We also hold a yearly “Meet & Greet” event open to all interested illustrators and related industry professionals, and host talented artists (often our own members!) and business leaders to offer insight and inspire with their work and experience in the business.
Finally, we welcome the opportunity to encourage and provide informal mentorship to serious young illustrators, particularly those at the start of their professional careers.
